Guidelines for Safe Running on Club Nights

All runners must take personal responsibility for their own safety, whilst keeping a watchful eye on others running in the same group.

The following guidelines will be followed by all runners:-

  1. * When running in the dark make yourself highly visible by wearing bright clothing, preferably with fluorescent or reflective strips.  Be aware that drivers may find it difficult to see you.
  1. * Have your name, address and phone number on a card or paper pinned in your jacket or in a pocket.  If living alone include contact details of a friend or relative.
  1. When a group of runners is preparing to set off, the proposed route of the run should be clearly understood by everyone. A head count must be made before leaving. Someone from the group must be appointed to ensure that no one gets left behind.  Where possible, numbers should be checked from time to time along the route, say every two or three miles, and when a change of direction is being made.
  1. As more people join the club, it gets difficult to remember names; it might be a friendly gesture to repeat names when the head count is being made.
  1. If there are any runners under 18 in the group, please ensure that someone is allocated to ensure their safety. Young runners must not be in the lead.
  1. If possible one member of a group should carry a mobile phone.  In the event of an incident, first check if anyone is injured they are kept comfortable and safe. If appropriate contact emergency services, using 112 from a mobile as it will record your location.  Then phone the personal contact of the injured runner.  Finally inform a member of the committee as soon as practical, possibly by phoning the Trumpet Inn – 01386  446  227.
  1. * Take particular care when crossing side roads and driveways.
  1. If anyone decides to leave the group whilst out on the run, they MUST inform at least one other runner in the group.
  1. On returning to the start check that everyone who started out has returned or can be accounted for.

* These elements are equally important if out training alone.  Also carry a mobile phone, and include an ICE number – ‘In Case of Emergency’ who to contact e.g. home
